Norma Winstone – Voice

Described as “one of the glories of contemporary jazz” (Jazz Journal), Norma Winstone MBE is a multi-award-winning vocalist who has enjoyed a career spanning more than 50 years. Presented by Kaleidoscope Night, Norma will be joined by long-time collaborator and friend Tommy Halferty on guitar, and Steve Watts on double bass, to perform music both old and new.

Although known initially for evolving her own wordless approach to improvisation, Norma Winstone's extraordinary versatility means she is equally at home with the standards repertoire, performing with small groups, orchestras and big bands. Among other accolades, she was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2007, and she also received a Jazz FM Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.

Tommy Halferty – Guitar

Born in Derry, Northern Ireland, he began his musical career in the late 70s taking Jazz Guitar lessons with Louis Stewart, a world class jazz musician. Over the years, the Derry man’s muse has led him from Stewart’s lucid be-bop to the post-Coltrane intricacies of electric guitarists such as John McLaughlin, John Abercrombie and Pat Metheny, and on to explore the tangled pathways that connect jazz with folk, Irish traditional, Brazilian and even Indian music.

Now based in Dublin, Tommy teaches jazz guitar at Dublin City University and maintains a busy performance schedule across Ireland and France.

Nikki Iles

As a founder member of the hugely innovative Creative Jazz Orchestra in the early 90s, Nikki Iles came to prominence working with musicians such as Anthony Braxton, Vince Mendoza, Mark Anthony Turnage, Kenny Wheeler and Mike Gibbs. Mike subsequently booked her for one of her first recording dates with great American musicians, Steve Swallow and Bob Moses on the CD “By The Way” on AH HUM records. For many years, Nikki served a lengthy apprenticeship in the North of England playing with the cream of British and American jazz such as Peter King, Iain Ballamy, Art Farmer, Peter King ,Tina May ,Tim Garland and Jim Mullen.

Kaleidoscope Night

The series is curated by cellist Lioba Petrie, managed by Caterina Schembri with SM management by Lina Andonovska.

Description

After opening in 1963 The Irish Film Theatre closed its doors in 1985. It would be another 14 years before the space would be used again and so it was in August 1999 that The Sugar Club was born.
